Making Tax Digital: what are the dates, requirements and penalties?

Plus Icon

Start dates

  • 6 April 2026: qualifying income over £50,000 in 2024–25.
  • 6 April 2027: qualifying income over £30,000 in 2025–26.
  • 6 April 2028: qualifying income over £20,000 in 2026–27.

Qualifying income combines property and self-employment income before expenses. Exemptions may apply.

What you need to do

  • Sign up with HMRC and keep digital income and expense records.
  • Use compatible software to send quarterly updates and your annual tax return/final declaration.
  • Quarterly update deadlines: 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May.
  • Annual return deadline: 31 January after the tax year ends.

Quarterly updates are summaries, not quarterly tax bills.

Penalties

  • 2026–27: no penalty points for late quarterly updates, but all updates must be sent before the annual return. Late annual returns still attract points.
  • From 2027–28: late quarterly updates also attract points. Four points trigger a £200 penalty, with further £200 penalties for subsequent missed submission deadlines.
  • Late tax payments can attract separate penalties and interest.

Check HMRC’s current guidance for your circumstances.
